The increased durability and security offered by commercial doors make them an ideal choice for any business. They also allow companies to personally customize their doors with a variety of different hardware to meet the specific needs of their property.

Choosing the right parts

However, when faced with an array of different levers, hinges, locks and handles, selecting and installing the right components on your door can be somewhat daunting. That’s why it’s always best to turn to a professional commercial locksmith when looking to outfit your Edmonton business with new doors. At Aegis Locksmiths, we’ll assess your current situation and recommend the hardware that best suits your needs, such as:

  • Door closers. A door closer is a mechanical device attached to both the doorframe and door and automatically closes a door once it’s been opened. It allows the speed and closing force of the door to be adjusted, which in turn decreases the wear and tear exerted on the door over time.

  • Locking systems. Commercial locksets vary in nature and selecting the right one for your needs will depend on the intended use. Exterior doors usually require a more resilient locking mechanism, such as a one-sided deadbolt lock with a steel strike plate, which will serve as an anchor and strengthen the door frame to prevent it from being kicked in. Interior doors, on the other hand, may call for a more sophisticated locking mechanism. An electronic lock, for example, can be remotely controlled and monitored from a computer.

  • Door handles. Several different styles and options are available when it comes to door handles intended for commercial use. A common type is the lever handle, or the push/pull model, which consists of an inactive handle that is only used to open the door. Another example is an exit device, such as a touch bar (rod exit device) or box (rim exit device) mounted on the front of the door. Here, pushing the bar or box will unlock and open the door and then lock it again once it closes.

  • Hinges. Light-duty and heavy-duty hinges need to be more durable and are therefore made from stronger gauge metals such as steel and brass. The amount of traffic that passes through the doorway will determine which of the two you’ll need for your commercial door.
