5 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU GET A KEYBOX OR LOCKBOX FOR YOUR BUSINESS

If you have a business or apartment building in Alberta, you are probably aware of the law making it mandatory for you to have a lockbox or keybox installed outside your building for the Fire Department to access the building. But there are many other reasons to get a keybox or lockbox which can make key storage and exchange easier and more secure for you, your employees or customers. Before you go out and buy one, be sure to ask yourself these 5 questions to help you make an informed purchase.

1.What is it holding?

The type of keybox you get will be different depending on how many keys you are planning to store in it. A hotel or rental car agency that needs to store dozens of keys in one secure place will have different requirements from a small business that needs to leave one set of keys outside. Because a good keybox can be quite expensive, it’s important to think ahead and buy one that will meet your needs well into the future.

2. Where are you putting it?

All keyboxes/lockboxes, such as the fire department or real estate lockboxes are always exterior use only and designed for allowing certain select individuals with the key or code to enter a building for specific reasons, whereas all key cabinets are interior use only and designed for obtaining various building/automotive keys from a central designated location. Outdoor units will always have more to them as they must be more resistant and rustproof in case of bad weather.

3. Who will be accessing it?

If you have a hotel where customers need to drop off keys at any hour of the day, you will need a very different type of keybox than if you’re leaving a key to be picked up by an Airbnb renter. Some keyboxes use a key of their own while others use an analog lock or digital combination to get access. Each has their advantages but if more than one person needs to access it at any given time, a digital combination is probably the best route to go.

4. When will it be used?

If you are a real estate agent who doesn’t want a key to a property accessed after a certain time of day, some digital keyboxes can be programmed to stay closed for certain hours while opening at others.

5. Who should you buy it from?

Buying your keybox from a licensed, trustworthy locksmith means that you will be getting the best advice on your purchase, without up-selling or adding features you don’t need. You are also guaranteed a high level of service and care which you would not get if you bought online.
